Nakshatra calculator
Date, time and place of birth → your janma nakshatra with pada, and your chandra rashi (Moon sign).
No login. Nothing is saved: your birth details are used for this one calculation and discarded.
प्रमाण · What is a janma nakshatra?
The janma nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at your birth — the base of lunar Jyotish: it names your Vimshottari sequence and colors the mind the Moon carries. Each of the 27 nakshatras spans 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac and divides into four padas of 3°20′ (one navamsa each). The doctrine for every nakshatra — lord, deity, symbol, gana and all four padas — is public in our knowledge base, cited to the classical sources.
प्रश्नोत्तर · Frequently asked questions
- How do I find my nakshatra by date of birth?
- Enter your date, time and place of birth. The calculator computes the Moon’s sidereal position with the Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanāṃśa) and returns your janma nakshatra with its pada, plus your chandra rashi (Moon sign). No login, and your birth details are not stored.
- Do I need my exact birth time?
- As exact as you can get it. The Moon moves roughly 13° per day, so it changes nakshatra about every day — a wrong hour can shift your pada, and near a boundary it can change the nakshatra itself. If you only know the day, the result is still right whenever the Moon stayed in one mansion all day.
- What is a nakshatra pada?
- Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ and divides into four padas of 3°20′ — one navamsa each. The pada refines the reading and fixes the traditional nāmakaraṇa starting syllable used for baby names.
- Is this calculator sidereal or tropical?
- Sidereal, with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanāṃśa — the Indian standard for Jyotish. Many Western apps default to the tropical zodiac, which is why they can place your Moon in a different sign.
