Vimshottari is the classical 120-year timing cycle of Jyotish (BPHS, chapters 46–49). It starts from your janma nakshatra: its lord rules the first mahadasha, and the nine periods follow in fixed order — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years. Each mahadasha subdivides into antardashas and pratyantardashas in the same proportions. We compute the timeline with a 365.25-day dasha year, the convention used by standard Jyotish software — and the doctrine of each period is public in our knowledge base.
- How is my current mahadasha calculated?
- From your janma nakshatra: its lord rules the first mahadasha, and how far the Moon had advanced through that nakshatra at birth sets how much of it was left. The nine periods then follow in the fixed Vimshottari order over a 120-year cycle (BPHS, chapters 46–49), computed with the Swiss Ephemeris — sidereal, Lahiri ayanāṃśa.
- Why do my dasha dates differ from other apps or my pandit’s chart?
- Almost always one of two conventions: the ayanāṃśa (we use Lahiri, the Indian standard) or the length of the dasha year (we use 365.25 days, like standard Jyotish software; some use 360). A birth time that is off by even a few minutes also shifts the whole timeline.
